I made a decision a little over a month ago to cancel my music streaming service (Spotify) after another price increase. I've been a Spotify user since 2014, so I did not expect this to be an easy transition. I used to get all my music for free (ahem), and then Spotify came around, and I liked this idea of any music I could want available at any time in one place.
But the price for streaming has increased over time. I'm not enthused about paying another corporation to stream content. I started buying music to support artists on Bandcamp a few years ago after dating someone who was really into Bandcamp. I've discovered a lot of different artists and new music through Bandcamp and I didn't expect that I would or that I would like the music I found as much as I did.
So, I started building a music library again. I stopped using Spotify for listening to music most of the time. I learned about ad-free internet radio (forgive my ignorance) and Radio Paradise. I started listening to internet radio instead of listening to my same playlists over and over. I've branched out and found new music.
It came to a point where I was barely using Spotify, and there was the most recent price increase. And it just wasn't worth it anymore.
It's been a month. I really thought it would be a harder transition. I haven't missed it at all. I think I was ready to quit with the knowledge of internet radio stations I could still listen to music on without ads. Internet radio plus building a music library meets my needs. I was thinking on my drive home that I wouldn't listen to the music I was streaming on internet radio if I hadn't canceled Spotify. I'm glad. C'est la vie, subscription music streaming services. Back to the olden ways once again.
